Nestled in the heart of Portland at 923 SW Oak St, Courier Coffee is much more than your typical cafe—it’s a carefully curated experience that celebrates both exceptional coffee craftsmanship and unique Japanese-inspired flavors. Specializing as a Cafe and Coffee Shop, Courier Coffee confidently stands out in a competitive coffee scene by roasting their own beans in-house and offering a distinctive blend of pastries and savory bites that delight all the senses.
At Courier Coffee, every cup tells a story. From a velvety espresso shot that commands your attention with its rich depth, to the refreshing chill of their Japanese-inspired shaved ice (kakigōri), or the understated elegance of a perfectly crafted cortado, this place is a mecca for coffee lovers who crave both quality and creativity. Their mocha lattes and cappuccinos are revered among regulars for their ideal balance—luxuriously creamy foam atop robust, nuanced espresso, creating a harmonious sip every time.
The menu goes beyond coffee with thoughtful offerings like dango curry rice and gimbap, bringing a delightful and unexpected twist of Japanese cuisine to the casual cafe environment. Sweet tooths will gravitate toward housemade delights such as the buttery canele, salt caramel chocolate chip cookies, or the melt-in-your-mouth mousse au chocolat. Pair these with creative beverages like the nutty and earthy hojicha tea or a frothy almond milk hot chocolate, and you have a menu that satisfies cravings both familiar and adventurous.
The atmosphere at Courier Coffee is an intimate blend of rustic charm and modern minimalism, described aptly as “quintessential millennium rustic.” The space is beautifully curated with fresh flowers adorning the tables and a vintage record player softly filling the room with vinyl tunes, creating a cozy vibe that invites lingering conversations and quiet moments alike. As one happy customer, David Mir, passionately put it, the space feels so welcoming you might feel as if you’ve known it forever, “like you have been in this place for a lifetime.”
Customers consistently rave about the quality and care evident in every detail—from the lovingly roasted beans to the freshly baked pastries. Ashley Cotter’s enthusiasm captures it perfectly: “I wish I could drink the cappuccinos Kate makes every day. Perfectly balanced, perfect foam, perfect size.” Meanwhile, PappaJohn Floyd highlights the unique partnership behind the counter, operated by spouses who bring expertise in both coffee and Japanese cuisine, making each visit feel special and authentic.
Whether you’re seeking a standout pour-over coffee on a sunny Portland morning or a thoughtful spot to unwind with a delicately flavored baked custard, Courier Coffee offers a memorable sensory journey that’s as much about community and atmosphere as it is about the wonderful food and drinks. As Nathan Berres shared from his own experience, everything was “10/10,” underscoring the impeccable service and quality you can expect every time.
Courier Coffee isn’t just a coffee shop; it’s a destination—an impressive fusion of craft, comfort, and culinary creativity. For anyone visiting Portland or locals in search of their next favorite coffee spot, skipping this gem would truly be doing yourself a disservice.
This is BY FAR the best coffee/espresso in Portland. We visited once, and came back everyday. He roasts his own beans and makes all the pastry in house. Pastry is dead on, not too sweet, and flavorful. The interior is quintessential millennium rustic, clean, and fresh (flowers on table, record player in background). You will do yourself a disservice if you do not come here. BTW check my other review I NEVER give 5 stars across the board...this place deserves it.
I wish I could drink the cappuccinos Kate makes every day. Perfectly balanced, perfect foam, perfect size. Paired with one of the house pastries, it’s an entirely delicious experience. Such a Portland staple and the vibes and drinks are as good as ever. Roast their own beans too!
Courier is a “destination” coffee shop. The pastry selection is limited, but unique and fresh-baked on the spot everyday. The shop is operated by spouses, one sees to the coffee side, the other to the Japanese food. Eclectic ambiance, with vinyl music coming from a turntable on the counter. Expect a short line to order and a wait for the limited seating on weekends, but it’s worth it. They roast beans daily (off site, but locally.) Courier is a landmark institution that Portlanders were happy to see survive COVID through innovation and initiative.
This place is an absolute GEM. Their pastries are right out of the oven, and the coffee is so good. The vibe makes you feel like you are at home, as if you've been in this place for a lifetime. Easily one of the best coffee spots in Portland .
My first time at Courier Coffee was an absolutely delightful experience that was made even better by the beautiful, sunny day. Their coffee is the most unique I've tried in Portland, I've never tasted anything else like it. Alongside their amazing coffee, there's pastry options to pair making this is a great spot to relax. The service was absolutely amazing and everything I got was 10/10. I highly recommend everyone in Portland to give this place a try, I'll be back!
Amazing coffee, freshly baked pastries (best strawberry muffin I have ever had) and inari. Wow!
